EduCensus is a national school census platform built for the realities of the field and the needs of governments. Field collectors travel by motorcycle to rural schools that have never appeared in any official registry, document them using a mobile tablet application, and synchronize records to a national ministry of education database. The result is structured, verified, and policy-ready school census microdata that ministries and multilateral agencies can act on.
How EduCensus works
Field collection at scale
Trained field collectors visit schools with tablet devices running the EduCensus mobile app in offline mode. They capture GPS coordinates, photographs, enrollment data, teacher records, and infrastructure details — no internet required in the field.
Ruggedized field infrastructure
At the end of each day collectors sync to a Local Storage Unit — a solar-powered, ruggedized field server that batches all records including photographs and transmits to the ministry database when connectivity is available.
Live ministry dashboard
Ministry officials see newly registered schools appear in the national dashboard within minutes of each sync. Schools receive permanent Ministry IDs and are immediately available for policy analysis, budget allocation, and international reporting.
Research-ready open data
EduCensus public-use data files are hosted on Harvard Dataverse with a permanent DOI, structured following NCES ECLS-K data architecture, and fully documented in the EduCensus Official Codebook. Free for research and policy use.
